Gilbert J. Liberatore, 91

MIDLAND-Gilbert J. Liberatore, 91, of Midland passed away peacefully April 21, 2014 at Westminster Thurber Community in Columbus, Ohio. He was the devoted and loving husband of the late Norma J. Liberatore and they were married nearly 62 years.

Born January 4, 1923 in Midland, he was the son of the late John and Maria Liberatore, and lived in Midland all his life until moving to Marriottsville, Maryland in 2011 and Columbus, Ohio in 2013.

Gilbert graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941. He served in the Army in the 976th Air Engineer Service/ 550th Air Service Group as an aviation technician in Italy during WWII. He worked at Patterson Foundry and then Crucible Steel in Midland until his retirement in 1982. Gilbert enjoyed bowling, golfing, card playing, reading, crossword puzzles and Sudoku. He also loved spending time with his family. Many knew him as an avid inventor and enjoyed his collection of riddles and math puzzles.

Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law Dr. Rebecca Liberatore Bias and Stephen H. Bias, Columbus, Ohio; two sons and daughters-in-law, G. John Liberatore II and Patricia Green Liberatore, Marriottsville, Md., D. Mark and Karen Cerjak Liberatore, Greensboro, N.C.; eight cherished grandchildren, Heather H. (Chandon) Simonis, Ryan, Alexis, and Eric Liberatore, Alicia Green, Richard and Hannah Liberatore, Heather (Paul) Boscia, and three great-grandchildren, Lillian and Chloe Simonis and Summer Broetjes.

A memorial service will be held at Schwerha-Noll Funeral Home in Midland at 1 p.m. on July 3, 2014. Cards may be sent to Rebecca Bias, 3758 Canon Ridge Place, Columbus, OH 43230. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gilbert and Norma Liberatore Scholarship Fund, Ohio Valley College of Technology, 15258 State Route 170, East Liverpool, OH 43920.
