Richard A. Porter, 90

Dr. Richard Allison Porter, 90, of Hendersonville died Thursday, July 5, 2007, at the Carolina Village Medical Center. He was born May 10, 1917, in Newell, W.Va., the son of the late Margaret and Frederick Porter. He moved to Hendersonville in 1947 as a family physician, where he served the area for 39 years prior to retiring in 1986. He was a graduate of Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va., and Case Western Reserve Medical School in Cleveland, Ohio. He served as a flight surgeon in the Air Force. He was on the medical staff at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., prior to moving to Hendersonville. He was an Eagle Scout, an elder of Trinity Presbyterian Church and a volunteer with Head Start. He served on the staff of Pardee Hospital. He served on the boards of the Henderson County YMCA, the United Way and Habitat for Humanity, and was a founding board member of Carolina Village. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Alice Porter; his brother, Bob Porter and his wife, Joy, of Clearwater, Fla.; his three children, Ann Pyles and her husband, Jerry, of Hendersonville, the Rev. John Porter and his wife, Beth, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Nancy Porter of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at Trinity Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Mark Stanley will officiate.
