RIO RANCHO, N.M. – Harry Edward West Sr., 84, of Rio Rancho, N.M., since 2009, and formerly of Dover, Ohio, was called to eternal life on Dec. 14, 2012.

Ed was born Sept. 11, 1928, in Zanesville, Ohio, to the late Harold E. and Ruth Lewis West, and was the eldest of four children.

He was preceded in death by brothers Ben and Harold.

On Dec. 6, 1952, Ed married the former Thelma Wells. Their marriage was a long and happy one (57 years) until Thelma’s death in 2010.

He is survived by a sister, Darletta Snyder of Toledo; son Harry Edward West Jr. and wife Noreen of Friendly, W.Va., and their children Rachel of Baltimore, Md., Patrick and Hannah of Morgantown, W.Va.; and daughter Sara Santilli and husband Tony of Rio Rancho and their daughters Amy and Anna.

A graduate of both West Liberty State College (1950) and the University of Pittsburgh (1953), Ed taught briefly at Chester High School – his alma mater – in 1950, before serving as sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He returned to teaching at East Liverpool’s Garfield School and then at East Junior High until 1957.

He worked as a general line salesman of roofing and building materials from 1957 until 1970 with the former T-K Roofing Manufacturing Co. in Chester, that eventually was acquired by the Celotex Corp. Also, Ed sold floor coverings wholesale from 1970 until retirement in 1995, having worked for Canton’s Edward R. Hart Co., Shelley and Shelley, and Cleveland’s H.J. Weber Co.

Cremation has taken place and interment will be at Columbiana Memorial Cemetery in East Liverpool, at a later date.

Donations in Ed’s memory may be made to the roofing fund for the First United Methodist Church, 240 Carolina Ave., Chester, WV, 26034.
