CALCUTTA – James V. Harsha Sr., 85 of Crestvue Place, passed away at East Liverpool City Hospital Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, after a lengthy illness.
The son of the late Elzie C. and Stella Ruth (Flint) Harsha, he was born in East Liverpool March 26, 1917, and lived his entire life here.
James was the owner-operator of the former Harsha’s Pennzoil in Calcutta for more than 30 years, last working in 1979. His commitment to his faith was evident by a sign that appeared in the window of his station that read, “Closed Sundays, try the Lord’s service, it’s better than ours.” He had also fixed many flat bike tires for the children of the area at no charge.
He was a graduate of the East Liverpool High School Class of 1935 and a veteran of the U. S. Navy, having served during World War II. Jim was also an active member of the East Liverpool Church of the Nazarene, where he was a former elder. He was also a past president and helped with the teaching of the Home Builders Class of the church. He enjoyed meeting on Mondays with fellow men of the church to do needed repairs in and around the church.
When the Calcutta fire siren sounded, Jim could be seen at the intersection in front of his station, directing traffic for the fire department.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Erma V. (Barnhart) Harsha, whom he married Sept. 19, 1939; two sons and daughters-in-aw, James V. Harsha II and his wife Roxie of Calcutta and Lee C. Harsha and his wife Tonia of Clearwater, Fla., a sister Ila M. Horger of Calcutta; six grandchildren, Beth Wan Amy Cunningham, Jim Harsha, Crystal Harshberger, Shannon Janzen and Tonya Janzen; and three great-grandchildren, Caylle Cunningham, LeeAnn Shehan Harsha and Troy Harshberger.
In addition to his parents, a brother, Thomas Harsha, preceded Jim in death.
Services will be Thursday at 1 a.m. at the Calcutta Chapel of the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes, with Pastor Larry Hall of the church officiating.
Burial will follow in the Calcutta United Presbyterian Cemetery.
The family will be present to receive friends at the Calcutta Chapel today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm.
