Richard Baker Sr.

LISBON – Richard E. “Rick” Baker Sr., 66, of East Chestnut Street, passed away at 7:25 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Essex I of Salem following a recent illness.

Born Sept. 29, 1947, in Salem, he was a son of the late Carl and Betty (Grimes) Baker.

A Methodist by faith, he had worked in the maintenance department at Louisiana Pacific for 17 plus years until he retired.

He proudly served our country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corp during the Vietnam War, where he received the Purple Heart Medal with two gold stars.

Survivors include his daughters, DeAnn Baker-Burger of Jacksonville, Fla., and Leah Miller of Calabash, N.C.; son, Richard Baker Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his companion, Cleona J. Matthews of Lisbon; his half-brother, Ronald Grimes of Lisbon; and several stepbrothers and stepsisters.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jason Baker.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home with the Rev. Pamela Gable officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home following the service by the Salem Honor Guard. No calling hours will be observed.
