Mrs. Susan S. Mahaffie, 91, pioneer St. Clair Township resident, and widow of Jonathan Newton Mahaffie, died in her home at Calcutta Saturday at 5:35 p.m. Mrs. Mahaffie was born near Fredericktown, May 28, 1842, a daughter of Robert and Mary Schmoll McFarland. Her maternal grandfather was Adam Schmoll, who came to America in 1776 with the Hessian General Riedesel, to fight the colonists for the British in the Revolutionary War. After the war Schmoll decided to remain here and settled on a farm in Beaver County near Ohioville, PA. His wife, Mrs. Mahaffie’s grandmother, lived to be 100 years old. She was married on March 5, 1860 to John Toland who died August 17, 1877. She was remarried in 1893 to Mr. Mahaffie, who died April 15, 1931. She was the mother of 10 children. Two survive, Thomas C. Toland of Fredericktown and Mary F. Toland of Calcutta. She also leaves one brother, Andrew C. McFarland, 83, of Fredericktown, 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in the home Tuesday at 2 p.m. in charge of Rev. W.H. Baker, pastor of the First Church of Christ. Burial will be made in the Calcutta United Presbyterian Cemetery.

Note: Grandmother was Barbara Weigle Smull/Schmoll who married Andrew Smull 22 September 1795 in Lancaster County, PA. Error in obituary – Andrew Smull not Adam was the grandfather.
