CALCUTTA – SAMUEL K. SHAFFER, 90, passed away Monday morning, Jan. 9, 2006, at East Liverpool City Hospital following a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Arch and Georgianna (Bell) Shaffer, born in Glenmoor, on the former Shaffer Farm, on May 18, 1915.
Mr. Shaffer retired from McIntosh-Hemphillin 1977, where he worked on the roll gang. He graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1933 and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Shaffer was a member of the East Liverpool/Calcutta Ruritan Club, the Columbiana County Historical Society, the Beaver Creek Forest and Parks Council, former president of Columbiana County Farm Bureau and the Sandy Beaver Canal Association. He wa volunteer at Beaver Creek State Park, where the Barn was named in his honor for his loyal service. He attended Longs Run Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Shaffer is survived by his wife, Louise (Baker) Shaffer, whom he married in 1943, a son, Samuel Shaffer II and his wife Pam of Calcutta; a granddaughter, Kimberly Shaffer and a sister, Mabel Shaffer of Calcutta.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan 12. 2006, at the Calcutta Chapel of the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Home with Rev. William Betteridge of Riverside Presbyterian Church in Wellsville officiating.
Burial will follow in East Carmel Cemetery.
The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home in Calcutta from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006.
