LAWRENCE EARL SKILES, 97, of Weirton, passed away on Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, at the Weirton Medical Center.
He was born in Perrypolis, Pa., on Feb. 1, 1901, the husband of the late Margaret Skiles.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Weirton.
He retired from National Steel as a foreman after 45 years of service. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, two sisters.
He is survive by one Godson, Charles Nurmi, of Weirton; and a nephew, Raymond Skiles, of Weirton.
He has been a member of his church for 59 years and had previously served as Benevolence Treasurer for 10 years and chairman of the congregation.
He was a charter member of the Friends of the College; WEst Virginia Northern Community College, former president of the Hancock County Animal Rescue League; former councilman from Marland Heights, former president for 10 years of Steelworks Community Federal Credit Union. At the credit union, he served as: former chairman of the education committee; former chairman of the credit committee; former chairman of the supervisory committee.
He was a former member and former vice president of the West Virginia Credit Union League, Charleston, W.Va.; former member of the Weirton Kiwanis Club, former chairman of the Boy SCout Troop No. 34 in Weirton; former member of the American Cancer Society, Hancock County Chapter, National Republican Congressional Committee in Washington D.C., and member of the Congressional V. I. P. Club in Washington.
Arrangements were handled by Steele and Wolfe Funeral Home, 380 Penco Road, Weirton, W.Va.
The funeral was officiated by the Rev. Terry Stoops. Burial took place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Weirton.
