Norman Irwin Vodrey, 77

EAST LIVERPOOL East Liverpool native Norman Irwin Vodrey passed away at the age of 77 on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at 1:55 p.m. Formerly of Jennings Avenue, he had resided at Calcutta Health Care Center, as well as Crossroads at Beaver Creek, in recent years.

A son of the late Wendell Hall Vodrey and Jane Irwin Vodrey, Norman was born here on May 4, 1937. He was a 1955 graduate of East Liverpool High School, where he played the tuba in the band, and was graduated in 1959 from Ohio Wesleyan University. Norman also served his country with the U.S. Air Force in Albuquerque, N.M., in the early 1960s.

For nearly 40 years, he worked in Columbus as a computer supervisor for Ohio Power, which later became American Electric Power. Upon his retirement in the late 1990s, he returned to this area to be nearer to his sister, Nancy, and other relatives and friends.

A 57-year member of the Circus Fans of America, Norm had a lifetime fascination with anything having to do with trains, carnivals and circuses. He loved parades, calliope music and streetcars, and always enjoyed family reunions.

He had been a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church his entire life.

Preceding him in death on Jan. 21, 2012, was his only sibling, Nancy Vodrey Dahl.

Surviving are two nephews, Douglas E. Dahl of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Brandon V. Dahl of Los Angeles, Calif., as well as dear friends Joseph T. Chontos and Amy McCormack, both of East Liverpool, who remained loyal friends to Norm.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Friday, where the family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m.

Rev. Dr. Stephen Cramer of Trinity Church will conduct services at the funeral home on Saturday at 2 p.m. Norm will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will provide full military honors.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the excellent care and concern shown to Norm by the staff at Calcutta Health Care Center throughout his illness.
