Thomas J. Wern, 73, of 508 Putnam St., a retired steelworker, died Monday at 7:10 p.m. at City Hospital after a long illness. A native of Pughtown, Mr. Wern was born July 23, 1895, a son of the late Frank A. Wern and Nora Allison Wern. He retired 10 years ago from the Weirton Steel Co., where he worked in the 54 – inch Strip Mill. He was a member of the Friendship Gospel Tabernacle of East Liverpool. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Pauline Kidder Wern, at home; a sister, Mrs. Jane Kessel of New Cumberland RD 1; four brothers, Harmon Wern of Colliers, W. Va., Gomer A. Wern of Ownings Mills, Md, Paul Wern of New Manchester and William Wern of New Cumberland, Pa., several nieces and nephews. Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Welch Funeral Home in Hookstown by the Rev. Charles S. Taylor and The Rev. George Bennett. Burial will be in Mill Creek Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 tonight and Wednesday afternoon and night.
